Nothing gets one’s appetite for football whetted
more than first considering the game from a
financial angle! In February 2009, Tampa
hosted its fourth Super Bowl and it turned out to be
one of the most exciting ever. Now that we're one
year past the big game, we take a retrospective look
at the business side of hosting a Super Bowl
This meeting qualifies for

Speaker: Steve Hayes is the Executive Vice President and
CEO of Tampa Bay and Company (formerly Tampa Bay
Convention and Visitor’s Bureau).
As the executive vice president, Steve is
responsible for the day-to-day operations of the
bureau, assisting the CEO in the development of all
strategic priorities, directing an operating budget
of $7 million and working with the board of
directors and funding entities to assure the success
of tourism in the Tampa area. Additional duties
include working with the leadership team to attain
the strategic and tactical goals of the bureau.
Steve started in the tourism industry in 1983 as an
intern at the Peoria Area Convention & Visitors
Bureau. He joined the Tampa Bay Convention &
Visitors Bureau in 1987 as a tourism sales manager
and was promoted to vice president of tourism
marketing in 1994. Major achievements while in Tampa
include:
Recognized by Advertising Age as of the “Top
100 Marketers” in 1999 for the development of an
innovative marketing approach for generating summer
leisure travel business.
Directed efforts in development of destination
ad campaign that received seven advertising awards
from the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association
International, including “Best Advertising Campaign
for a Convention and Visitors Bureau.”
Served in various capacities with the National
Tour Association’s including the Board of Directors,
Marketing Committee, DMO Council, Member Value
Council, Convention Task Force and International
Relations Committee.
Has served on various committees of the
International Association of Convention & Visitor
Bureau’s including the Research Committee and
Tourism Committee (currently serving as chair),
Compensation Task Force and the Performance
Measurement Team.
Member of Visit Florida’s Marketing Committee
Member of the board of directors for the Tampa
Bay Chapter of Sales & Marketing Executives
