Governmental Seminar Recap

February 3, 2004

If you missed it, earlier this month there was another awesome seminar put on by the IIA West Coast Chapter. 96 members attended and listened to an excellent group of speakers and were joined by five of our colleagues from the Ft. Myers chapter for our first joint presentation.

Topics were delivered in a presentation format in the morning and then topics were worked through in detail in small group workshops in the afternoon. Topics included:

  • Performance Standards - Bob Nelson CFE, CGFM, CIA Consultant, State of Ohio Treasurer's Office
  • Information Technology Auditing in the Small Audit Shop - Beth Brier, CPA, CISA from the City of Tallahassee
  • Peer Review Process - Alan Ash, City of Gainesville

The PowerPoint presentations for all three sessions are available to download from our web site.

CAP Review

A chapter must accumulate 1,560 CAP points to achieve gold status. Through January 2004, the Florida West Coast Chapter has 1,439 points. The successful February 3rd seminar, followed by the USF student social, has put our chapter over the top for a record 11th straight year. We are still accumulating points by awarding two additional $1,000 scholarships to deserving students, making presentations on accounting and auditing topics, and hosting the annual awards banquet following the April 20th seminar at the Safety Harbor Resort.

The Audit Corner

Tom Stambaugh attended the Public Utility Research Conference (PURC) held at the Public Utility Research Center, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Feb 11-12, 2004. "The theme, 'When Is Competition the Regulator', was stated in a context that competition is not yet a 'done deal', but examples exists where we are getting closer. One was in telecommunications. Many people are beginning to use cell phones only, and not have a landline phone installed in one's home. Landline revenue appeared to be rising at a decreasing rate or leveling."

In Memory - 50 Year Member

Having just received his IIA West Coast Chapter 50 year membership pin in the mail, we are sorry to learn from his family that Kenneth Kilgore, of St. Petersburg Beach, passed away October 21, 2003.

CISA Review Course to be held in Clearwater

The CISA certification is a prerequisite for many audit and security job postings in the marketplace today.
