Members' Message
March 24, 2005
It's hard to believe we have reached the last seminar of the 2004-2005
Chapter year. I'm sure you'll all find Valerie Cade Lee's sessions on
Inspired Leadership: Going From First Class to World Class,
Implementing Internal Auditor Leadership Excellence, and Making It
All Happen/Pulling It All Together – Let’s March! informative and
entertaining. Valerie is an international speaker having spoken in
seven countries and more than 70 cities worldwide in the last year, and has
been featured on radio, television and newspapers internationally. Make
plans to attend at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa on April 5th.
However, we still have some work to do before we can put this year "in
the books". We need to select the Chapter Leadership for the 2005-2006
Chapter year, so be looking for a ballot in your inbox. And we still have
the business of certifications, training and support of the Internal Audit
profession. This newsletter is packed with valuable information.
I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the sessions on
April 5th!
Regards,
Bob McCall

Inspired Leadership: Going From First Class to World Class
How are
you doing and how do you know? Empowerment with fun accountability, ensuring
attitudes are in alignment and purposeful productivity are some strategies
World Class Leaders implement in order to rise above average, consistently.
These are key factors leaders will make time for, because it makes sense to
do so.
Implementing Leadership Excellence for Internal Auditors
When
you’re really leading, people follow willingly. Yet in the absence of
followership, many people hold onto policy, pull back or struggle with
enjoying the journey. We know trust is important but how do you create it?
Learn how to inspire commitment, create accountabilities with ease and lead
through conflict. Also, learn to over-come ‘polite professionalism’ with
win/win assertiveness.
Valerie
Cade Lee is human connect-ability! Her inspirational "down-to-earth"
sincerity which is both relevant and laced with humor, is her trademark. She
is CEO and co-owner of one of Canada's largest seminar and implementation
consulting companies,
The Performance
Curve, and she is an international keynote presenter. Her
business and speaking experiences come first hand as having:
- Recently been given the CSP (Certified Speaking Professional)
Candidacy Designation. (Less than 300 worldwide) for speaking excellence
- Strategically turned around two "near bankruptcy" million dollar
companies to very profitable successes;
- Raised over 1 million dollars for Canada's second oldest sports club
in her role as Marketing Director;
- Consistently been awarded 'speaker of the year' from 2 international
training companies Valerie received the Top Candidate Award for Canadian
Basic Military Training (one of 7 women and 600 men); and
- She is an international speaker having spoken in 7 countries and 70
cities worldwide in the past 10 months, and has been featured on radio,
television and newspapers internationally.
The "old" motivational approach is not applicable for audiences that are
"in the know." Today's challenge is not necessarily acquiring more
information. Today's challenge is to be inspired to take action and use the
information. Valerie's unique combination of experience, humor and
enthusiasm is a winning formula for your personal and professional success.

Academy of Finance Internship Program
What is the Academy of Finance?
Established in 1982, the Academy of Finance (AOF) prepares high school
students for post-secondary education and careers through academic learning
and hands-on work experiences within a theme-based curriculum, developed
with leading representatives from industry and education to ensure that
courses are both current and relevant. Students are exposed to broad career
opportunities in the financial services industry, creating new options and
equipping students to make sound choices for the future.
What role does the Academy of Finance play in Hillsborough County?
Four Hillsborough County high schools (Brandon, Jefferson, Armwood and
Chamberlain) currently house Academy of Finance programs. Students complete
coursework in Financial Accounting, Operations, Computing and Planning and
are well versed in Microsoft Office. The students even operate their own
branch of Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union within each of the four
schools!
What can companies like mine do to help?
Companies are needed to provide paid internships to the students ready to
graduate from the program (Seniors). The paid internship is, without doubt,
the most memorable and critical component in the Academy of Finance
experience for the students. It is also extremely rewarding, for the
students as well as for the companies providing the internships. For the
students, it gives them the opportunity to prepare for “real-life” by
applying, in a real world setting, what they’ve learned in their Academy
classes in the preceding years. For the companies, it gives them the
priceless reward of being mentors for our youth (and sometimes they even
gain new permanent employees)!
What are the expectations of intern supervisors?
Rate of Pay:
$8.00 / hour
Length of Internship:
The Academy curriculum requires each student to complete a paid internship
of at least 150 hours. Internships are flexible and can be structured in a
number of ways. Here are a couple examples:
• A six week summer internship at approximately 40 hours per week
• A three to four month spring internship at 10-20 hours per week
Time Commitment: Mentorship and performance feedback is important for the
students’ personal and professional growth. Plan to meet with your intern
formally once a week to provide feedback.
Count me in!
How do I request an intern or more information? We thank you for your
interest in this program. You are making an investment with a return too
high to measure!
Please contact Tom Reghanti, Director of Brandon High School’s AOF program
and Internship Coordinator at
Thomas.Reghanti@sdhc.k12.fl.us or 813-468-0968.
